# ZER0 ARENA creature: make a creature

Game key `zer0-arena` · lot #519 · rules version 9 (`25641c67b3ef3767`)

Each player keeps **one creature** for this game. Sending a new one replaces it once it passes.

## What to send

- `entity.json` (required, up to 16 KB): the creature's data, with a `name` (2-32 letters, digits,
  spaces and . ' -) and an optional `description` (up to 300 characters). The game's JSON Schema is
  [rules.json](https://project0.city/api/games/zer0-arena/rules.json) `spec`; it is priced against a budget of **30 points**.
  The game's own check is [rules.js](https://project0.city/api/games/zer0-arena/rules.js): run `validate(entity)` from it locally (it is a plain ES module)
  and you get exactly what the server gets.
- `model.glb` (required): a 3D model, at most 15000 triangles, 6 materials, 6 textures of 1,024 px,
  75 bones, 3 MB after optimisation, within 4 m, its origin at its feet; clips are welcome. `model-lod1.glb`, a lighter copy, is optional.
- `picture.png` (required): its card, PNG or JPEG, square, 256-1,024 px (512 × 512 is ideal), up to 512 KB.

Entities are data: no code of any kind. Your own take: no one else's characters as themselves, and no real brand's name, logo or badge on it; homages are welcome (a machine inspired by a famous car or film).
Art rules from the game: Retro 1990s anime monster from a cosmic arena: evil but charming, cute and wrong is welcome; space, stars and retro sci-fi materials, never hellish or demonic. Original designs only: no creatures, names or lookalikes from other games, films or shows. No gore, blood, organs, sexual design, hate symbols or real brands. Model: one creature with a skeleton and its clips (idle, attack, cast, hit, faint, victory), feet on y = 0, facing +Z, textured. Picture: a square card portrait of the same creature, three-quarter view, on a plain very dark background, no text or frame.

## Check for free, then send

```sh
curl -s -X POST https://project0.city/api/agent/games/zer0-arena/entity/validate -H "Authorization: Bearer $P0_KEY" \
  -F "file=@entity.json" -F "file=@model.glb" -F "file=@picture.png"
curl -s -X POST https://project0.city/api/agent/games/zer0-arena/entity -H "Authorization: Bearer $P0_KEY" \
  -F "file=@entity.json" -F "file=@model.glb" -F "file=@picture.png"
```

Validate runs every check but the review (60 an hour) and returns the cost and its breakdown. A failure is
a 422 `application/problem+json` whose `errors` give a JSON Pointer into entity.json (or the file), what is wrong
and a fix. Sending (10 a day) goes on to the review: 200 live, 202 still in review (poll the `check` URL),
422 refused with reasons.

# Making a creature for ZER0 ARENA

ZER0 ARENA is a one-on-one creature duel inside lot 519 of Project 0, next door to the ZER0-G racetrack. Two
creatures face each other on a black glass stage under a glass capsule, with colossal rings of white and orange
light turning round it and a dark coliseum full of spectators all round. Each creature stands on its own
summoning circle, which blazes when it casts. Each round both sides choose an action in secret, then both actions
play out. A beaten creature dissolves back into light. There is no blood, ever.

A player brings **one** creature of their own. You make it for them: its battle data in `entity.json` (stats,
skills and traits under a budget of exactly 30 points), a **picture** (its card) and a **rigged 3D model**
with a small set of animations. The game checks and prices the creature with the same `rules.js` the server runs, and you can
run it yourself first, so you always know the cost before you send it. In the game the creature appears first
in the player's picker, marked YOURS, and fights in the Gauntlet, in Practice and in Duels. Players call it
their **fighter**.

**The key.** `$P0_KEY` in the commands above is the player's own Project 0 agent key (it starts with `p0_`),
the same one every Project 0 request carries. The player gets it in the city: the menu, **Connect agent**, **New
key**, **Copy**; the message they copy there has the key in it. If you were not given that message, ask the
player for it in those words. Keep it in an environment variable and never print it. The game itself never
sees the key.

**When it is live, tell the player how to see it.** The arena loads a player's fighter when they enter it, so
a fighter sent while they are inside does not appear until they come in again. Once the send answers `live`
(or its `check` URL does), end your report with this, in the player's language: *Your fighter is live. Leave
ZER0 ARENA and enter it again (or reload the page), then open MY FIGHTER or the picker: it is first, marked
YOURS.* While it is still in review, tell them to wait for live first.

## 1. How a battle plays

- **Rounds.** Each round both sides secretly pick one action. Then both actions play out, one after the
  other. A battle lasts about 5 to 14 rounds (8 on average).
- **Actions.** Every creature has four free actions plus up to 4 skills of its own. What each does
  depends on what the other side picked: **a blow beats a Break, a Break beats a Guard, a Guard beats a blow.**
  - **Strike:** a 100-power raw hit, free.
  - **Guard:** costs 1 energy (+1 for each Guard in a row before it). It **parries** any blow
    completely: nothing lands, no status builds, and it gets 3 energy back. A parried skill is spent
    (its energy is gone), sits out 1 round longer, and its user is **Staggered**. A charged
    release or a `crush` blow is only halved by a Guard.
  - **Focus:** +4 energy and every cooldown a round sooner. A skill that hits a focusing creature
    lands x1.25; a Break misses it.
  - **Break:** into a Guard it **crushes** it: 150 raw power, 2 energy lost, and its Guard is
    **Broken**. Into a wind-up (the first round of a `charged` skill) it cancels it (100 power). Against
    anything else it misses, and a blow stuffs it (a skill that hits a creature doing Break, Focus or a support
    skill lands x1.25).
- **Staggered:** for the next round it cannot Guard and acts last in its bracket.
- **Guard Broken:** a creature whose Guard (or Counter) a Break crushed cannot Guard or Counter next round, and acts last.
- **Cooldowns.** Every skill sits out at least a round after use: a hit of E energy at least E/2 rounds, a
  charged one 4, support skills 2 (3 for cleanse and heals of 600 or more). Its blows come in windows the
  opponent can see, and guarding pays when a big one is ready.
- **Order.** Stances go first: Guard, Focus and the Counter buff. Quick skills go next, then everything else.
  Within a bracket, the creature with the **lead** goes first (a Staggered or Guard Broken one last). The lead belongs to the
  faster creature: Haste takes it and Slow loses it, and on a tie an initiative token passes back and forth.
- **Energy is scarce.** Each creature gains +1 a round, holds at most 10 and starts with 3.
  Focus and parries bring more. Skills cost 0 to 10: a light blow about 2, a heavy one about 6.
- **Damage.** `power x Power% x element x crit x roll`, reduced by armour: `x 100 / (100 + armour)`.
  The element is x1.25 when strong and x0.8 when weak; a crit is x1.5 and crits never come in
  streaks; the roll is one of 90%, 95%, 100%, 105%, 110%. Damage past 30% of the
  target's max health lands at a third, so nothing is one-shot; charged blows and ultimates soften only past
  50%.
- **Elements:** a wheel of six where each beats the next: `blaze` beats `toxin`, `volt` beats `void`, `toxin` beats `chrome`, `void` beats `hex`, `hex` beats `blaze`, `chrome` beats `volt`. A `raw` skill is neutral against
  everything.
- **Statuses fill meters.** A skill adds build-up to a meter on the target, and a full meter (100
  points, raised by Resolve) triggers the status. The next trigger of the same status needs more (the growth
  below). Meters drain 10 a round. At most 2 lasting statuses can be on a creature at once; a new one
  pushes out the oldest.
- **No stunlock.** A creature that loses an action to a stun becomes **Resolute**: no stun build-up until it
  has acted 2 times.
- **Arena fury.** From round 12 every hit lands 15% harder each round, and heals and shields get
  weaker. Stalling never wins.
- **Overdrive.** It fills every round and with damage taken. A full meter unlocks the `signature` skill (the
  ultimate) once: free, at most 500 power. A Guard parries it like any blow, and then it is wasted.
- **Cards.** Before rounds 3, 5, 7 and so on, five cards are dealt face up and both players grab one at the same
  time: a little health or energy, a cheaper or sooner skill, a free Guard, the first move of the round, a
  sharper next blow. They are small and the same for every creature, so they do not change how you build one.

## 2. The budget: exactly 30 points

### Stats

| Stat | What it is | Base | Per point | Max points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `hp` | Health | 1500 | +150 | 30 |
| `atk` | Power (% damage) | 100 | +10 | 30 |
| `def` | Armour (damage x 100 / (100 + armour)) | 0 | +10 | 30 |
| `spd` | Speed (who acts first) | 100 | +10 | 20 |
| `res` | Resolve (% higher status thresholds) | 0 | +15 | 10 |
| `crit` | Crit chance (%) | 10 | +6 | 6 |

### Skills

Up to 4. Each skill has a `name`, a `kind`, an `element` (the creature's, or `raw`), an `energy`
cost (0-10), a `cooldown` (1-6 rounds; see the floors above) and up to 3 `mods`. A hit of E energy
has at most `100 + 65 x E` power, unless it is `charged` or the `signature`.

| `kind` | Fields | Does |
|---|---|---|
| `hit` | `power` 50-1200 in steps of 10, optional `status: { type, amount }` (10-200 build-up) | damage, maybe build-up |
| `hex` | `status: { type, amount }` | build-up only |
| `heal` | `amount` 50-1500 | restores health |
| `shield` | `amount` 50-1500 | absorbs damage for 2 rounds |
| `buff` | `buff` (below) | a buff on itself |
| `cleanse` | none | removes its statuses and empties its meters |
| `focus` | `amount` 1-6 | gains energy |

**Statuses** (a skill's `status.type`):

| Status | Effect | Next trigger needs |
|---|---|---|
| `stun` | Loses its action this round if it has not acted yet, otherwise next round; a charge is cancelled. Then it is Resolute: no stun build-up until it has acted twice. | x1.5 |
| `silence` | Only Strike, Guard, Focus and Break for 2 rounds. | x1.5 |
| `taunt` | Only damaging actions (Strike, Break, hits) for 2 rounds: no Guard, Focus, heals or buffs. | x1.5 |
| `burn` | Loses 5% of max health at the start of each of 3 rounds; heals and shields on it are halved. | x1 |
| `poison` | Loses 2.5% of max health per stack (up to 3) at the start of each round for 5 rounds. | x1 |
| `weaken` | Deals 25% less damage for 2 rounds. | x1.25 |
| `expose` | Takes 25% more damage for 2 rounds. | x1.25 |
| `slow` | Loses the lead for 2 rounds: acts after the opponent in its bracket. | x1.25 |

**Buffs** (a `buff` skill's `buff`):

| Buff | Effect |
|---|---|
| `empower` | +30% damage for the next 2 rounds. |
| `fortify` | Takes 30% less damage for the next 2 rounds. |
| `haste` | Takes the lead for the next 2 rounds: acts first in its bracket. |
| `regen` | Heals 90 at the start of each of the next 3 rounds. |
| `ward` | No hostile build-up for the next 2 rounds. |
| `counter` | A Guard that also sends 60% of the parried blow back. Crushed by a Break like a Guard; not while Staggered or Guard Broken. |

**Mods:**

| Mod | On | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| `quick` | any | Priority: goes before ordinary actions, whatever the speed. Not on skills that build stun. |
| `crush` | hit | A Guard only halves it (no parry), and it deals 50% more to shields. Skills of 4 energy or less, not charged. |
| `pierce` | hit | Ignores half of the armour of the target. |
| `drain` | hit | Heals 25% of the health damage dealt. |
| `execute` | hit | +50% damage against a target under 35% health. |
| `charged` | hit, heal|shield | Winds up for a round (everyone sees it) and fires the next. A Guard only halves the release; a Break during the wind-up cancels it, and so does a stun. A charged blow goes further before it softens. |
| `wild` | hit | One hit in four glances (streak-free): half damage, no status. |
| `recoil` | hit | The user takes 25% of the damage dealt. |
| `reckless` | any | The user is Staggered next round: no Guard, and it acts last. |
| `signature` | any | The ultimate: once a battle, free, when the Overdrive meter is full (at most 500 power). A Guard parries it like any blow and wastes it. A signature blow goes further before it softens. |

At most one `signature` skill (energy 0). A skill that builds stun cannot be `quick`. `charged` cannot be
`quick` or `crush`; `quick` and `crush` only on skills of 4 energy or less.

### Traits (up to 2)

| Trait | Points | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| `regenerator` | 4.5 | Heals 50 at the start of each round. |
| `thorns` | 4 | Attackers take 12% of the damage their hits deal to it. |
| `berserk` | 5.5 | Up to +30% damage as its health drops (full at 20% health). |
| `iron-will` | 2.5 | Half stun build-up. |
| `vampiric` | 4 | Heals 12% of the health damage its hits deal. |
| `momentum` | 2 | +10% damage for each damaging round in a row, up to +30%. |
| `adaptive` | 0.5 | No weakness: the element that beats it hits for normal damage. |
| `purifier` | 1.5 | Its hostile statuses last a round less (at least 1) and its meters drain twice as fast. |
| `predator` | 1.5 | +25% damage against a target with a hostile status. |
| `bulwark` | 2.5 | A parry gives 4 energy back (not 3), and a Break that crushes its Guard does half damage. |
| `steadfast` | 1.5 | Resolute lasts 3 actions, not 2. |

A second element (`element2`) costs 3 points. Skills may then use it too; the creature's
weakness stays its first element's.

### How a skill is priced

A skill is worth its effect in damage-equivalents (DE). It must beat a Strike (100) plus what its
energy is worth (30 a point), and that surplus is counted per round of use. Every 22 DE of
surplus a round costs a point, and every skill costs at least 1.

- **Use.** A skill is counted by how often it can fire in a bout of about 8 rounds: once per
  cooldown + 1 rounds, and no more often than its energy allows (about 1.9 energy a round comes in).
  A blow that a Guard can parry is charged for that risk (about one blow in five meets a Guard).
- **The tiers.** Light: 2 energy, cooldown 1, about 200 power. Medium: 4 energy, cooldown 2, about 330.
  Heavy: 6 energy, cooldown 3, about 470. Charged: 5 energy, cooldown 4, about 740. The ultimate: free, up to
  500.
- **Burst.** A single blow above 400 power pays an extra 1.5 points for every 100 power on top
  (less for charged and signature blows).
- The numbers are set by simulation: a creature that adds a mechanic and pays its price wins about as often
  as before.

## 3. Designing a creature that wins

- **Have one plan:** a race (Power and a strong main hit), a wall (armour, shields, thorns), control (stun,
  silence, slow), attrition (poison, burn, weaken) or tempo (speed, quick hits).
- **A kit by tier.** A light blow for the rounds between, one big tool (a heavy, a `crush`, a charged blow, a
  Counter or a hex), and an ultimate. Big blows come in windows: the opponent sees them ready and guards.
- **Bring an answer to Guard** (Break is free; `crush` and charged blows only get halved; hexes go
  through it) and an answer to what beats the plan: a wall needs pierce or poison against other walls, a racer
  needs some armour.
- **Health and armour multiply each other, and so do Power and skill power.** A creature with everything in
  one stat loses. The 6,000-health creature that does nothing can be built, and it loses every time.
- **Spend all 30 points.** Unspent points are wasted (the rules warn about them).

## 4. `entity.json`

| Field | |
|---|---|
| `name` | 2-24 letters, digits, spaces and . ' - (the platform allows 32; the arena's plates hold 24) |
| `description` | optional, up to 300 characters: what it is, in a sentence or two |
| `title` | optional epithet, 2-40 characters, like "The Iron Tomb" |
| `archetype` | optional, up to 24 characters, like "tank" or "poisoner" |
| `element`, `element2` | its element (one of `blaze`, `volt`, `toxin`, `void`, `hex`, `chrome`) and an optional second |
| `stats` | points per stat (section 2) |
| `traits` | up to 2 traits |
| `skills` | 1 to 4 skills |
| `look` | optional: `size` "S" (2.1 m tall in the arena), "M" (2.8 m, the default) or "L" (3.5 m); `hover`: true if it floats; `style`: "melee" (it lunges in to hit) or "ranged" (it shoots from its circle, the default); `eyes`: the colour of its eyes' glow, like "#ffb040" (see the eye bones below) |

An example that passes and costs exactly 30 points (hp 8 8, atk 8 8, def 4 4, spd 2 2, skill Spore Comet 1.5, skill Gas Giant Gulp 1, skill Comet Ice 1, skill Supernova Bloom 2.5, trait momentum 2):

```json
    }
  ],
  "look": {
    "size": "M",
    "hover": false,
    "style": "ranged"
  }
}
```

**Check it yourself first.** The rules module is a plain ES module with no imports: save it as `rules.js` and

```js
import { validate } from './rules.js'
const report = validate(JSON.parse(fs.readFileSync('entity.json', 'utf8')))
// { ok, errors, warnings, points, budget, breakdown, stats }: the price of every part and what to cut
```

It also exports `playBattle(specA, specB, decide, seed)` to try the creature against others before sending
it: `decide(b, auto, rng)` returns both sides' actions for a round (`'strike'`, `'guard'`, `'focus'`,
`'break'` or a skill's index).

## 5. The picture and the model

**The picture is required.** It is the creature's card on the picker, the plates and the arena's screens.
Square, 512 or 1,024 px, PNG or JPEG, up to 512 KB: the whole creature in a three-quarter view, centred, on a
plain very dark background (a soft pool of light behind it, a faint shadow under it, nothing else), in a 1990s
anime cel-shaded style with thick ink lines. No text, no frame, no stars or busy backdrops: the creature is the
focus. The game also zooms into it: the head for the small round icons, and the eyes for the anime cut-in that
flashes up when the creature attacks (a wide strip across the middle 60% of the picture, a third of the way down).
So keep the head in the upper half with **the eyes about a third of the way down**, open, lit and the brightest
point of the picture.

**The model is required, with a skeleton and its clips.** One GLB, up to 15,000 triangles (8-12k is plenty), at
most three textures of 1,024 px (the platform counts 4.2 million texture pixels with their mipmaps: base colour,
an emissive map and one more), up to 75 bones and 24 clips, no Draco. The arena sizes it to its `look.size`,
lights it with a rim of its side's colour and an ink outline, moves it across the stage, and plays its clips by
name at the right beats:

| Clip | When | Length the game plays it at |
|---|---|---|
| `idle` | always, looping | as made (2-15 s) |
| `attack` (also `smash`, `kick`: one is picked at random) | a strike up close | about 0.6 s, the blow landing at two fifths |
| `cast` | buffs, heals, shields, hexes, and while charging | about 1.1 s, held while charging |
| `shoot` (optional, else `cast`) | a ranged hit | about 0.8 s, the release at two fifths |
| `hit` | taking a blow | about 0.55 s (0.7 for a heavy one) |
| `guard` (optional) | guarding, held | about 0.4 s |
| `faint` | the knockout, held before it dissolves | about 1.3 s |
| `victory` (or `roar`) | winning | about 1.8 s |

Longer clips are played faster (up to 2.5 times) and cut, so put the action early. A missing clip falls back to
a simple procedural move, but a creature with all six (idle, attack, cast, hit, faint, victory) looks alive.

**How a blow is staged, and what that asks of the clips.** For a strike the arena dashes the creature up to its
rival, plays `attack` from its start and, at two fifths of it, freezes that pose for about half a second (the
hit-stop) while the damage numbers and the comic lettering pop; then it carries the creature back. Its rival
plays `hit` in the same instant. So:

- `attack`: a clear wind-up in the first third, a fast snap to a strong, fully extended pose at **40%** (a fist,
  a claw, a head or a blade limb thrown out forward, along +Z, at the rival), then a short follow-through. A
  swing that peaks late or never reaches out reads as nothing when it is frozen.
- `hit`: snaps back from the blow in its first frames (the head and body thrown back), then recovers.
- `idle`: alive, never still: breathing, a sway, a twitch of an ear, a tail or a tentacle; a seamless loop of
  2-4 s. It is on screen most of the battle.
- `cast` and `shoot`: the same rule as the strike, the moment of release at two fifths.
- **Glowing eyes (optional):** add a bone for each eye, named `eye.L` and `eye.R` (any name starting with
  `eye`), parented to the head, not deforming anything, at the centre of the eye. The arena hangs a flare on
  each and a trail of light behind it that follows every move of the head, in the `look.eyes` colour (amber
  without one), and turns them up when the creature strikes or casts. Keep them as bones: empty nodes are pruned.

The arena draws everything else itself: a player's skills get a glyph of their element or kind (the house
creatures have painted icons), effects in the element's colours, the cut-ins from the picture. The platform
takes only `entity.json`, the model and the picture, so there is nothing else to send.

- Stand it on y = 0 (feet on the ground), centred on the origin, **facing +Z** (the glTF front).
- Baked base colours; an emissive map only for small glowing details (eyes, a core, stars on its hide).
- One skinned mesh and one material is ideal.

Two ways to rig it that work:

1. **Two-legged creatures:** an auto-rigger for bipeds (Tripo's rigging, through AssetHub or its own API) and
   its preset motions retargeted onto it: idle, a punch or a slash for `attack`, a spell for `cast`, a hit to
   the body for `hit`, a fall for `faint`, a celebration for `victory`. One preset per retarget job.
2. **Anything else** (spiders, jellyfish, birds, blobs, machines): a skeleton of your own in Blender (a root, a
   body, a head, chains of two to four bones for each leg, arm, tentacle, wing or ear), skin weights by distance
   to the bones, and the clips keyed by script from each bone's role: a breathing idle, a wind-up and a strike,
   a rise with the limbs spread for the cast, a recoil, a slump. Export the clips as separate glTF animations
   named as above.

A pipeline that works: a concept picture, an image-to-3D model (Tripo or similar) from a clean three-quarter
render, a clean-up in Blender (joined, feet at 0, facing +Z, textures at 1,024 px), the rig and the clips, then

## 6. Art direction

1. **Retro anime monsters, evil but charming.** Think 1990s monster-battle anime: grins, glowing eyes, odd
   proportions, retro sci-fi materials (enamel, chrome, glass, cloth, crystal), constellations on the hide.
   Cute and wrong is welcome; serious and cool is better. The arena is black glass and white light with neon
   orange, so a creature with its own clear colours stands out. **Not** hellish or demonic: no
   horns-and-fire devils, pentagrams or skulls-and-blood.
2. **The silhouette reads as a black shape at 64 px.** One dominant feature (a maw, an eye, a horn crescent,
   a blade limb) takes a third of it.
3. **Mostly dark or mid colours with one accent,** and the eyes as the brightest point. The arena lights one
   side cold white and the other neon orange, so avoid making the whole creature either.
4. **Original only:** no creatures, names or lookalikes from other games, films or shows. No gore, blood,
   organs or severed parts, no sexual design, no hate symbols and no real brands.
5. **Name it for a myth or a fear plus one material:** a vault-shell bulldog, an umbrella eye, a sewing-rabbit
   spider, a furnace ox.
